Trees and Fruits II

This follow up post is long overdue and yes, today is not Thursday but am writing and posting this anyway.

Trees and Fruits I was quite sobering and eye-opening, I had to take some time out to contemplate, think, pray and plead with God over my state – a bad/dire – dare I say even rotten tree (whatever I share here speaks to me too).

As I sought God and poured out my heart to Him; my biggest request was that He shows me where the rot all started/ at what point I went wrong/ where I started treading south and this is what came of it:

The CAUSE must be ascertained and dealt with before the problem is solved.

The problem with me is that I AM A SINNER BY DNA and that I MAKE CHOICES THAT SKEW ME IN THAT DIRECTION – effortlessly. It’s like a walk down a sloping trail; you go lower and lower without stress or strain.

This Poem by Portia Nelson shows how that scenario plays out:

I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in.
I am lost… I am helpless
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place.
But, it isn’t my fault.
It still takes me a long time to get out.

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in. It’s a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

Having known the cause of the problem, my prayer was then for God to change me; to make me a good tree; to make me like JESUS – The only one who walked the earth and came out of it untainted – for to be a good tree is to be like him.

Here is what was revealed as the way forward;

§ Fortify yourself with God’s word – As Christians, the word of God is a lamp unto our feet (Psalm 119:105). “The heart preoccupied with the Word of God is fortified against Satan. The Holy Spirit will work with your cooperation from within to change you from inside only as you eat of the bread of life. The food of which the tree eats is its first step to health. Good Food = Good Health = Good Tree.

§ Life is changed by seeing: Seeing here means: what absorbs your attention / what draws your affections / what you behold / what you focus on basically. As we all know:

Portia’s poem ends this way:

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.
I walk down another street.

For me walking around the hole means a shedding of many things e.g.:

- A change of companions or even cutting some of them off

- That I stop watching certain series and movies and throw away my DVDs

- That my change for certain music has to change and I have to delete them

- It may even mean a season of solitude as God strengthens me to stand

Walking down another street will mean for me a faithful integration and practice of other things e.g.:

-Having godly standards, proudly living by them and defending them at whatever cost.

- Having consistent devotions – both morning and evening

- Deliberately planning for every hour of the day to stay faithful

- Involvement in community service

- Choosing a different topic of conversation with those around me

- Meditating on Jesus and His life

- Being an active member in the ministry using my God-given talents

The list is endless…

Whatever being a good tree means to you my friend, "Keep looking unto Jesus. He is your strength. By beholding Jesus you will become changed into His likeness. He will be the health of your countenance and your God…” (TDG – 245.5)
